Codrer Industries

Here I code indiegames (independent games). I drink caffeine. Lot of debug also.

Cognitive issues

Day 058
Horizon Keepers
Tuesday September 9, 2014

I've been doing some experiments with my scene system. The problem was... odd. How to put that? Flying above a rounded planet forbid some kind of scenes. I can imagine some landscapes, but from a mathematical point of view, that's simply impossible to build. Rendered scene stays... flat as hell.

After painfuly processing this problem, I realized that it was simply due to the fact that I'm not familiar with aerial views in my everyday life. Sure.

I have rethought my scenes: it's not a problem of "going up", but rather of what goes down!

Day 062
Horizon Keepers
Monday September 15, 2014

A procedural shadow map for my procedural ground, and everything is different! Textures upgraded in accordance, some vertex computations have been refined here and there...

And that might be the final touch for the battleground!

I hope so anyway.

Sci-Fi Mandatory

Day 070
Horizon Keepers
Tuesday September 30, 2014

Introducing the Jumpgate as a transport facility. It’s free, it’s fast.

But most work was about setting up the multiplayer system. As an async combat game, there's a lot of pitfalls to deal with.

Multiplayer 94.8%

Day 072
Horizon Keepers
Wednesday October 1, 2014

8 players test, 94.8% accuracy. That’s better and better.

But those last percents frighten me. I'm experiencing some oddities with rendered flying moves using bezier curves. Cleary my fault. But which fault?

I'm now reading pages and pages and pages of logged angle interpolations from past battles. It's not going to be the most fun debugging of my life. Nope.

Need some more black coffee.

Postcard from HK

Day 079
Horizon Keepers
Thursday October 16, 2014

Day after day, spending hours and hours playing with HK, I'm still improving the very basic routines. Bullets movement, collisions, fly controls, movement accuracy... there's always something to tune.

Thankfully, new core routines have been added...

  • server login
  • account creation
  • auto update
  • tutorial map

Ninety-ninety rule

Day 083
Horizon Keepers
Monday October 27, 2014

"After the first 90% of code is done, there’s the remaining 90% of code to be done."

In the last 90% there's for example the whole GUI as Ogre is a pure graphical engine.

Fortunately I was able to take back my user interface class written from my previous Ogre game. Still a lot of work to adapt to HK's needs... but at least I didn't had to write a whole GUI from scratch.
